Library

Library of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology

The development of the Library of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology (IEA) reflects broader academic and institutional processes that have taken place in the Republic of Macedonia and are directly related to the establishment of ethnology and anthropology as academic disciplines at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.

The foundation of the Seminar for Ethnology at the Faculty of Philosophy in 1925 marked the starting point in creating a specialized collection of publications in the fields of ethnography, ethnology, and anthropogeography.

Following the establishment of the Seminar for Ethnography and Ethnology in 1946, Prof. Dr. Branislav Rusić took active steps toward founding and equipping the Seminar Library. Through the transfer of surplus books from the National Library in Skopje and the purchase of additional works with personal resources, the library held approximately 1,300 bibliographic units at that time. After the closure of the Seminar in 1953, and with the separation of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics from the Faculty of Philosophy in 1958, the library’s holdings were transferred to the Institute of Geography. Until the establishment of ethnology studies in 1988, no significant acquisition of professional ethnological literature was undertaken.

From the founding of the Department of Ethnology within the Institute of Geography until 2005, the library obtained only the most essential domestic and foreign publications in the field of ethnology and anthropology. After the establishment of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology in 2005, a process was initiated to reclaim ethnological and anthropological literature that, according to library records, had originally belonged to the ethnology study program.

Library Database

At present, the library contains 7640 registered bibliographic units, including serial publications, journals, collected volumes, monographs, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other reference works. The establishment of the IEA electronic database enables systematic searches and rapid identification of publications through their call numbers.

Digital Repository of Ethnological and Anthropological Resources (DREAR)

The Digital Repository provides open and non-commercial access to older editions with ethnological and anthropological content. The use of these materials requires proper citation, including reference to the source: “Digital Repository of Ethnological and Anthropological Resources (DREAR), title of the publication, and digitization details.”

Cataloging of Library Materials

The majority of the library’s holdings have been catalogued and are available for search. This ensures systematic monitoring of the collection and facilitates access to materials.
